The Winter Giant to walk down Broad Street this Christmas

A spectacular outdoor show will be coming to Broad Street this Christmas as the 20 foot tall Winter Giant will be walking through Reading town centre looking for a place to call home.

Taking place on Saturday 19th December, Christmas shoppers will be astounded by the 6-metre puppet which will be wandering down through Reading town centre.

As the puppet travels through Broad Street he will meet a series of ‘buskers’, made up of some of Reading’s finest musicians who will accompany the action.

The Giant’s path will be lit by children and their families, carrying lanterns, each designed by the families in free participatory workshops run in collaboration with Nature Nurture. Each lantern will be decorated to represent a home, full of warmth and light. Together, the lanterns will form the community that will welcome the giant.

The Winter Giant is the newest piece of outdoor theatre from Reading’s professional street theatre company, Beautiful Creatures. A spokesperson for Beautiful Creatures said: “The story speaks of our common humanity, of the importance of welcoming people, and of the desire amongst all humans to live in a safe and warm community.”

The performance is reminiscent of grandiose outdoor productions such as La Princesse the spider in Liverpool and Royal De Luxe’s Sultan’s Elephant.

The project brings together a production team from Otter Produces, 101 Outdoor Arts Creation Space, Nature Nurture and is supported by Reading UK CIC and Arts Council England.

The performance begins on Queen’s Walk at 5pm on Saturday 19th December and finishes in Forbury Gardens at 6.20pm.
